from the linear notes of the CD "Jewish Klezmer Music" by Zev Feldman & Andy Statman (Statman is the jewish american mandolin & clarinet player De Dannan worked with on their jewish influenced stuff... so here's a bit of an Irish connection.) Track 4 is "Doina" which is based on the Doina Naftulle. The notes say:
"Among the klezmorin, 'doina' was a form of improvisation. Originating in Rumanian folklore, it spread to Jewish communities in other areas. This doina is based on a recording by Naftali Brandtwein, an outstanding clarinetist who was born in Austrian Galicia and rose to prominence in New York in the 1920's, and it is on this that we have based ours."
PS 1 - Naftule Brandtwein is AMAZING. I got a CD of his 20's & 40's recordings. What a mensch!
PS 2 - Almost all klezmer music is in minor key, and the doinas are usually contemplative.
PS 3 - Andy Irvine was busking his way around eastern europe in his days before sweeney's men and planxty. If I recall correctly the linear notes on 'Cold blow...' he lived in Rumania for a while and composed some tunes over there.
